1 2-Dichloropropane (DCP) is an important aliphatic halogenated hydrocarbon with the molecular formula C₃H₆Cl₂, molecular weight 112.99, CAS number 78-87-5, and EINECS number 201-152-2. At room temperature, it is a colorless, transparent liquid with a faint, chloroform-like pungent odor. It is widely used in industry as a solvent and organic synthesis intermediate. It is stable at room temperature and does not readily decompose; however, it may burn or undergo oxidation reactions when exposed to open flames, high temperatures, or strong oxidizing agents (such as potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide).
