Chemical Properties Of 1 2-Dichloropropane

1 2-Dichloropropane (DCP) is an important aliphatic halogenated hydrocarbon with the molecular formula C₃H₆Cl₂, molecular weight 112.99, CAS number 78-87-5, and EINECS number 201-152-2. At room temperature, it is a colorless, transparent liquid with a faint, chloroform-like pungent odor. It is widely used in industry as a solvent and organic synthesis intermediate. It is stable at room temperature and does not readily decompose; however, it may burn or undergo oxidation reactions when exposed to open flames, high temperatures, or strong oxidizing agents (such as potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide).

Product Application Of 1 2-Dichloropropane

  1.  Solvent Applications:
    – 2-Dichloropropane serves as a diluent and cleaning agent in the coatings and ink industries, particularly effective for dissolving synthetic polymers like chlorinated rubber, neoprene, and polyurethane resins.
    – Propylene dichloride functions as a solvent for preparing neoprene adhesives and polyurethane adhesives.
-1 2-Dichloropropane functions as a metal cleaner and degreaser, removing oil, wax, and impurities from metal surfaces with minimal residue.
-Used as an extractant (separating organic compounds), fabric dry-cleaning solvent (partially replacing chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents), and printed circuit board cleaner.
  2.  Organic Synthesis Intermediates:
    – Used in the preparation of 1,2-propylene glycol. – Used in the synthesis of unsaturated halogenated hydrocarbons.
    – 1,2-Dichloropropane is used in the preparation of herbicides (e.g., diuron, propachlor) and insecticides.
    – Propylene dichloride is used to synthesize diamine compounds (pharmaceutical intermediates), as a raw material for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plasticizers, and as an intermediate for detergents.
  3.  Other Applications:
    – Propylene dichloride serves as an auxiliary foaming agent in polyurethane foam, regulating pore size and density.
-1,2-Dichloropropane serves as a common solvent or reaction medium in organic synthesis experiments, particularly suitable for halogenation reactions, addition reactions, and similar processes.
