Thymol, also known as 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol, has the molecular formula C₁₀H₁₄O and a molecular weight of 150.22. It occurs naturally in essential oils from the Lamiaceae family, such as thyme oil and oregano oil, and can also be synthesized from isopropylphenol. It appears as white or colorless needle-like crystals or crystalline powder with a characteristic aromatic herbal odor; its phenolic hydroxyl group is weakly acidic, and it exhibits broad-spectrum antifungal, antibacterial, and anthelmintic properties, while also serving as a fixative.

Fragrances and Personal Care: Used as a food flavoring agent in candies and beverages; as a fragrance in soaps and personal care products; and as an antibacterial ingredient in cosmetics.
Food Industry: Natural mold inhibitor and preservative for food.
Animal Feed, Agriculture, and Forestry Pest Control: Antimicrobial additive in animal feed to improve gut health in livestock, poultry, and aquaculture; used in agriculture for insect and mite control, as well as for mold prevention in storage facilities.
Other Applications: Intermediate in organic synthesis; component of microbial culture media.
