Dibutyl phthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2, C₁₆H₂₂O₄, MW ~278.35) is stable at ambient conditions but hydrolyzes in acid/alkali (especially with heat) into phthalic acid and butanol; it has moderate thermal stability, decomposing above 300°C to release toxic fumes, is highly soluble in organic solvents but slightly in water (15 mg/L at 25°C), undergoes transesterification and saponification, acts as a plasticizer for polymers like PVC, and reacts with strong oxidizers.
