It occurs naturally in rhododendrons, wheat, barley, rye, and in the metabolites of Malassezia fungi on the skin surface. Currently, it is primarily produced industrially through the ozone decomposition of oleic acid or the nitric acid oxidation method. At room temperature, it appears as white to pale yellow flaky crystals or a crystalline powder.
