Benzalkonium chloride （MF：C17H30ClN，MW：283.88）belongs to the quaternary ammonium salt class of compounds and is a commonly used cationic surfactant. Its primary functions are disinfection, sterilization, and preservation. It works by disrupting microbial cell membranes to kill bacteria (especially Gram-positive bacteria), fungi, and certain viruses (such as enveloped viruses), but it is ineffective against spores. It remains stable at room temperature and in neutral or weakly alkaline environments but may decompose when exposed to strong acids, strong alkalis, or high temperatures (above 100°C). It readily reacts with anionic surfactants (such as soap or sodium lauryl sulfate), rendering its bactericidal effect ineffective.

Medical Applications (Core Uses)

– Surface disinfection of non-invasive medical devices (e.g., blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes) via wiping or soaking with 0.1% aqueous solution.
– Auxiliary disinfection for minor burns, scalds, or fungal skin infections (e.g., athlete’s foot) using low-concentration formulations (e.g., 0.02%-0.1%).
Personal Care Applications
– As an ingredient in mouthwashes and toothpaste (0.05%-0.1% concentration) to inhibit oral bacterial growth, preventing gingivitis and halitosis.
– Added to shampoos and body washes to assist in dandruff control and oil regulation (concentration must be controlled to avoid scalp irritation); also used in contact lens solutions for sterilization and preservation.
Industrial and Other Applications
– Used for sterilizing industrial circulating water and swimming pool water to prevent microbial adhesion and biofilm formation.
– Serves as a surface disinfectant for equipment (must meet food-grade standards), but direct contact with food is prohibited.
