Benzyl Alcohol MF: C7H8O MW: 108.14, the simplest fatty alcohol containing a phenyl group, is a colorless transparent liquid with a faint aromatic odor. However, prolonged storage may cause oxidation to form benzaldehyde and benzoic acid, imparting a bitter almond-like odor. Phenylmethanol occurs naturally in plants such as jasmine, orange blossom, and cloves. Industrially, it is primarily produced through methods including toluene oxidation, hydrolyzation of chlorobenzyl alcohol, or reduction of benzaldehyde. Additionally, Phenylmethanol readily oxidizes to benzoic acid under various oxidizing agents (e.g., concentrated nitric acid). It possesses anesthetic properties and strongly irritates the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact is harmful.
