Calcium acetylacetonate is an important organometallic complex, chemically named bis(acetylacetonato)calcium, MF: C₁₀H₁₄CaO₄, MW: 242.26. It appears as a white to pale yellow crystalline powder. Industrially, it is primarily synthesized via coordination reactions. In its molecular structure, the central Ca²⁺ ion forms a hexacoordinate chelate with two acetylacetonate ligands (acac⁻) through oxygen atoms, exhibiting structural stability and a relatively high chelation constant. Calcium acetylacetonate reacts with strong acids to release acetylacetonate and form the corresponding calcium salt. It also undergoes ligand exchange reactions with other ligands (e.g., amines, phosphines) to produce mixed-ligand complexes. It exhibits no significant redox properties and has mild chemical characteristics.

Plastics and Rubber Industry:
– As a heat stabilizer (Calcium acetylacetonate) in the processing of plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene (PP)
– In rubber vulcanization, calcium acetylacetonate acts as an auxiliary crosslinking agent, promoting molecular chain crosslinking to enhance mechanical properties and thermal aging resistance
Catalyst Applications:
– Catalyzes organic reactions including ester exchange, aldol condensation, and Michael addition with high efficiency;
– Serves as a catalyst precursor for olefin polymerization and lactone ring-opening polymerization, used in conjunction with co-catalysts;
Materials Science Applications:
– Used as a ceramic precursor to prepare calcium oxide-based ceramics and perovskite composite oxides for electronic ceramics, sensors, and other devices
– Serves as a precursor for metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) in semiconductor and optical device applications
Other Fields:
– Potential raw material for calcium supplements or cosmetic formulations
– Functions as a coordination titrant (Calcium acetylacetonate) for quantitative metal ion analysis; or as a reference standard for calibrating analytical instruments
