Chemical Properties Of Calcium Propionate Cas 4075-81-4

  • Calcium propionate (MF: C6H10CaO4, MW: 186.22) is a safe and reliable food and feed preservative approved by the WHO and FAO. Like other fats, calcium propionate can be metabolised and absorbed by humans and animals, supplying essential calcium. This advantage is unmatched by other preservatives, and it is recognised as GRAS.
  • Calcium Propanoate functions as an acid-type food preservative. Under acidic conditions, it releases free propionic acid, exhibiting antibacterial properties. Its antimicrobial efficacy is influenced by environmental pH levels, demonstrating optimal fungal inhibition at pH 5.0. At pH 6.0, its antimicrobial capacity diminishes significantly, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.01%.

Product Application Of Calcium Propionate Cas 4075-81-4

  • Calcium propionate may be employed as a preservative additive in diverse foodstuffs including baked goods, cereal products, soy-based items, dairy products, and pickled foods.
  • As a feed anti-mould agent, calcium propanoate is utilised in maize, soybean meal, and silage to prevent mould growth during storage under high temperature and humidity conditions. This mitigates the risk of mycotoxins (e.g., aflatoxins) produced by moulds, thereby safeguarding livestock and poultry health.
  • Calcium Propinate is commonly employed in pig feed, poultry feed, and ruminant feed at typical addition rates of 0.1%-0.3% (by total feed weight). It extends feed shelf life while aiding intestinal flora balance regulation and enhancing nutrient absorption.
  • Minimal additions of calcium propionate during tobacco storage and processing inhibit surface mould growth, preventing spoilage and off-flavours while preserving tobacco quality and combustibility.
  • Calcium propionate is incorporated in small quantities into certain mild skincare products (such as lotions and creams) as an auxiliary preservative. When combined with other preservatives (e.g., phenoxyethanol), it enhances the inhibition of mould growth while exhibiting low skin irritation, making it suitable for products targeting sensitive skin.
  • It is added as an excipient in certain solid pharmaceutical preparations (e.g., tablets and powders) to prevent mould growth caused by moisture absorption during storage.
