In the food industry, carrageenan is used as a thickener, stabiliser, gelling agent, and emulsifier. For example, Kappa-Carrageenan is commonly used to prepare hard gels (jellies, meat products); Iota-Carrageenan is often used in ice cream, dairy products, and other freeze-thaw resistant applications; Lambda-Carrageenan is commonly found in beverages, sauces, and other thickening applications.
The sulfated polysaccharide structure of carrageenan confers certain biological activities (such as anti-inflammatory effects and regulation of intestinal microbiota), while its colloidal properties align with the requirements for pharmaceutical excipients. Major applications include: pharmaceutical excipients, intestinal health products, and drug carriers.
In the cosmetics and personal care sector, carrageenan is used as a thickener and stabiliser in skincare products such as lotions and creams, as well as in hair care and oral care products like shampoos and toothpaste.
As a paper strengthener, it improves the strength and tear resistance of paper sheets.
As a dyeing and printing aid, it enhances dye adhesion to fibres, resulting in more uniform colour.
Utilising its gel-forming properties and biocompatibility, it is used in 3D printing scaffolds (e.g., tissue engineering scaffolds).
