2-Phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (MF: C₁₃H₁₀N₂O₃S, MW: 274.30) is a water-soluble organic UV absorber containing a benzimidazole structure. It appears as a white, fine crystalline powder and is virtually odorless. It has good water solubility (even better when formed into a salt) and can efficiently absorb UVB radiation in the 260–340 nm range, with some absorption of UVA radiation. It possesses good photostability and thermal stability, is low in toxicity and irritation, and is one of the commonly used sunscreen ingredients in cosmetics.
