Cellulose acetate, with the molecular formula [C₆H₇O₂(OH)₃₋ₓ(OCOCH₃)ₓ]ₙ, has a molecular weight 10⁴~10⁵ that varies with degree of polymerization and degree of acetylation. It is a white, odorless, tasteless solid that is insoluble in water; its solubility varies with the degree of substitution, and it exhibits excellent film-forming properties and toughness. It is primarily used in pharmaceutical coatings, cigarette filters, fibers, films, coatings, and filtration materials.
