Chemical Properties Of Chitosan

Chitosan (MF: C₆H₁₁NO₄·2H₂O, MW: 161.16) is an industrial product appearing as a white or grayish-white, translucent, flake-like solid with a slight pearlescent sheen. Odorless, non-toxic, and readily biodegradable, it is one of the few naturally occurring cationic polyelectrolytes. Soluble in low-acidity aqueous solutions, it exhibits excellent biocompatibility, is non-antigenic, and insoluble in human body fluids. The molecular structure of chitosan contains active groups such as amino (-NH₂) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups, readily undergoing chemical reactions like acylation, etherification, cross-linking, and chelation. These reactions enable performance optimization through modification. Under acidic conditions, the amino group protonates (-NH₃⁺), imparting a positive charge to its aqueous solution and conferring ion exchange capacity.

Product Application Of Chitosan

  1.  Chitosan powder serves as a stabilizer, thickener, emulsifier, and clarifier in the food industry, and is used to prepare edible food films. It also functions as a dietary fiber component to promote intestinal motility.

  2.  Pharmaceutical Applications of Chitosan:
    – Used in drug delivery systems to prepare microspheres, nanoparticles, hydrogels, and other carriers.
    – Employed in absorbable sutures, wound dressings, and tissue engineering scaffolds.
    – Utilized for medical antimicrobial coatings.
    – Serves as a coagulant, heavy metal chelator, and functions as a moisturizer and antimicrobial agent in cosmetics.

  3.  Agricultural Applications of Chitosan:
    – Serves as a plant growth regulator to enhance crop root development;
    – Functions as a slow-release carrier for pesticides, improving utilization rates and reducing runoff while providing antimicrobial and insect repellent effects;
    – Regulates soil pH, improves soil structure, and adsorbs heavy metal ions.

  4.  Industrial and Environmental Applications of Chitosan:
    – Treating industrial wastewater (e.g., dyeing effluent, electroplating wastewater);
    – Functioning as a fabric finishing agent to impart antibacterial, wrinkle-resistant, and antistatic properties;
    – Serving as a paper strengthener and sizing agent to enhance paper strength and printability while reducing chemical additive usage;
    – Used in producing biodegradable films, ion exchange resins, adsorbents, and similar materials.
