Chlorinated paraffin is a mixture of chlorinated derivatives formed by the free radical reaction of straight-chain alkanes with carbon numbers ranging from C10 to C30 using chlorine gas. Typical products contain 40% to 70% chlorine. At room temperature, those with 40% to 52% chlorine content are pale yellow viscous liquids; Those with 54%–60% chlorine content are viscous yellow semi-solids; 70% chlorine yields brittle resinous solids. Higher chlorine content is preferred. Chemical stability is moderate. Increased chlorine content enhances flame retardancy and rigidity while reducing plasticizing properties (and vice versa).
| Item | 52#(106232-86-4) | 70#(63449-39-8) |
| Appearance | Transparent/pale yellow liquid | white powder |
| Chlorine Content | 52% | 70% |
| Melting Point | -30~-10°C | 90~120°C |
| Density (25°C) | 1.23~1.28 | 1.50~1.55 |
| Solubility | Insoluble in water, ethanol; readily soluble in organic solvents (better compatibility with PVC, rubber) | requires additional additives to improve compatibility |
| Thermal Stability | Stable below 200°C; gradually decomposes above 200°C, releasing HCl (requires thermal stabilizers to inhibit decomposition) | 70# decomposition temperature slightly lower than 52# |
As a flame-retardant plasticizer, Chlorinated Paraffin is used in PVC products:
– 52#: PVC flexible products (wire/cable sheathing, artificial leather, plastic films, hoses, sealing strips);
– 70#: PVC rigid products (pipes, sheets, profiles, flame-retardant cable insulation), fireproof coatings, flame-retardant rubber products.
As an industrial lubricant and additive, Chlorinated Paraffin can be used in metalworking fluids (cutting oils, rolling oils), gear oils, and hydraulic fluids;
-52# (liquid, readily soluble in mineral oils),
-70# (solid, requires dispersion in oil-phase systems), suitable for diverse lubrication system requirements.
Chlorinated Paraffin is used in coatings, inks, and adhesives, such as industrial anti-corrosion coatings, fireproof coatings, printing inks, and PVC adhesives;
– 52# offers excellent compatibility and minimal migration,
-70# is suitable for fireproof coatings with high flame retardancy requirements (requires solvent dispersion).
Other Applications:
– Used in rubber products (52# for soft rubber, 70# for hard rubber);
– Serves as a waterproofing and oil-repellent additive for specialty papers (e.g., packaging paper, industrial filter paper);
– 70# functions as a filler for plastics like PVC and PE, balancing flame retardancy with cost reduction.
