Cinnamic acid (β-cinnamic acid) is an unsaturated aromatic carboxylic acid containing a benzene ring. Its molecular formula is C₉H₈O₂ (structural formula C₆H₅CH=CHCOOH), with a molecular weight of 148.16. It primarily exists as a trans isomer and appears as white monoclinic prisms. with a faint cinnamon-like aroma. It is an organic acid naturally found in cinnamon bark and benzoin, and serves as an important synthetic intermediate in the fine chemicals industry. It is widely used in the pharmaceutical, fragrance, food additive, plastic, and photoresist resin sectors.
