Cobalt ii Nitrate, with the molecular formula Co(NO₃)₂·6H₂O and a molecular weight of 291.03, is an important inorganic cobalt salt. The molecule contains six molecules of water and is highly hygroscopic. It is readily soluble in water and ethanol; its aqueous solution is acidic. It decomposes easily when heated and exhibits some oxidizing properties. It is widely used in the preparation of catalysts, electroplating, ceramic coloring, pigment synthesis, and the production of cemented carbides.
Cobalt(II) nitrate hexahydrate is a soluble inorganic nitrate of divalent cobalt and a commonly used basic cobalt source in the chemical industry; it appears as transparent, scarlet-pink crystals that are highly hygroscopic and readily deliquescent; Its aqueous solution is pink and has oxidizing properties. It readily dehydrates and decomposes when heated, releasing toxic nitrogen oxides at high temperatures. It is classified as an oxidizing hazardous chemical and is the most commonly used soluble cobalt ion raw material in industry.
