Dextran, also known as glucan, is a branched, high-molecular-weight glucose polymer produced by the fermentation of sucrose using Streptomyces intestinalis. At room temperature, it appears as a white powder and is odorless and tasteless. Dextran exhibits excellent biocompatibility and water solubility. It is available in various specifications based on molecular weight (e.g., Dextran 20, 40, 70), with significant differences in applications among the different specifications. It is chemically stable and can be stored for long periods at room temperature.
