Dimethyl terephthalate is the product of esterification between terephthalic acid and methanol. Its molecular structure contains C₁₀H₁₀O₄ MW: 194.18, is the product of esterification between terephthalic acid and methanol. Its molecular structure contains two ester groups, endowing it with the typical chemical properties of ester compounds, such as susceptibility to transesterification and hydrolysis reactions. It can undergo direct solid-to-gas conversion at elevated temperatures, facilitating purification and refinement. DMT is one of the core monomers in the polyester industry.

Used in polyester fibre production, such as PET fibre (polyethylene terephthalate).
Plastics and film manufacturing:
– PET resin, the primary material for food, beverage, and cosmetic packaging bottles.
– Polyester film, used in electrical insulation materials, photographic film, magnetic tape substrates, and solar cell backsheets.
– Engineering plastics (PBT), utilised in automotive components and electronic/electrical enclosures.
DMT enables the preparation of high-strength polyester insulating varnishes for motor and transformer winding insulation; also serves as a film-forming agent in weather-resistant coatings and adhesives.
Fine Chemical Intermediates
– Used in synthesising plasticisers such as di-octyl terephthalate (DOTP) for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plasticisation.
– Serves as an organic synthesis intermediate in the production of pharmaceutical molecules and fixatives.
