Etidronic acid (HEDP,Hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid) is a highly effective organic phosphonic acid chelating agent and scale and corrosion inhibitor. Its molecular formula is C₂H₈O₇P₂, and its molecular weight is 206.03. The pure compound is a white crystalline powder, while the industrial grade is a colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid. It is highly soluble in water and alcohols. The molecule contains one hydroxyl group and two phosphonic acid groups. It exhibits high-temperature stability, high pH tolerance, and strong metal chelating ability. It is widely used in industrial water treatment, personal care, textiles, electroplating, and other fields. It is low-toxicity, environmentally friendly, and readily biodegradable.
