Chemical Properties Of Fumaric Acid Cas 110-17-8

Fumaric acid (MF: C₄H₄O₄, MW: 116.07), also known as fumaric acid or trans-butenedioic acid, occurs naturally in Corydalis, mushrooms, and fresh beef. It serves as a vital organic chemical feedstock, an intermediate in fine chemical products, and a key derivative of maleic anhydride. Its highly reactive chemical properties enable participation in Diels-Alder reactions; polymerisation, addition reactions, and other chemical processes. It finds extensive application in foodstuffs, coatings, resins, and plasticisers.

Product Application Of Fumaric Acid Cas 110-17-8

  1.  Fumaric acid is an internationally recognised safe food additive. In the food industry, it serves as an acidity regulator (acidulant) for beverages and jams, a preservative and antimicrobial agent to extend shelf life, and an auxiliary component in leavening agents to impart a light, porous texture to baked goods.
  2.  It functions as an antioxidant synergist in meat products, delaying fat oxidation to preserve colour and flavour.
  3.  As a vital pharmaceutical raw material, Fumarsure is employed for anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory effects, anxiolytic and sedative properties, expectorant and antitussive actions. It also regulates the pH of oral liquid formulations to enhance drug stability.
  4.  Acidum fumaricum serves as a crucial organic synthesis intermediate. In polymer materials, it synthesises polymer monomers to improve material properties; synthesises plasticisers for PVC products; and functions as a water treatment chelating agent and corrosion inhibitor.
  5.  As an acidulant and appetite stimulant, it is added to livestock, poultry, and aquatic feed to regulate gastrointestinal pH, inhibit bacterial growth, and prevent mould. In ruminant feed, it functions as a rumen fermentation regulator, improving protein utilisation.
  6.  In cosmetics, it serves as a pH adjuster for products such as lotions and creams.
  7.  In agriculture, it acts as a plant growth regulator, promoting crop rooting and enhancing fruit set rates.
