The isothiazolinone ring in their molecular structure is crucial for their fungicidal activity. They exhibit good stability in acidic to neutral environments (pH 4–8) but undergo hydrolysis and lose fungicidal activity in strongly alkaline (pH > 9) or strongly acidic (pH < 2) solutions. They are stable against oxidizing agents (e.g., sodium hypochlorite) but are easily degraded by reducing agents (e.g., sulfites).

  1.  Industrial circulating water treatment is one of the primary applications for isothiazolinones. It is mainly used as a biocide in circulating water systems, offering rapid bactericidal action, environmental friendliness, and good compatibility with corrosion inhibitors and scale inhibitors without compromising the overall effectiveness of the water treatment system.
  2.  Low concentrations of chloromethyl isothiazolinone (typically ≤0.01%) serve as preservatives in products like emulsions, creams, shampoos, and body washes.
  3.  In liquid detergents and dishwashing liquids, it functions as an auxiliary preservative and antimicrobial agent.
  4.  Isothiazolinones serves as a preservative in coatings (addition rate 0.05%–0.2%) and is also used in water-based inks to prevent spoilage and discoloration.
  5.  During leather tanning and fatliquoring processes, adding 5-Chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one prevents mold growth and decay in leather; it also functions as a sizing preservative in textile sizing agents.
  6.  Used in pulp and paper white water systems to inhibit bacterial and fungal growth.
