Itaconic acid, also known as methylene succinic acid or methylene succinic acid, is an unsaturated acid containing a conjugated double bond and two carboxyl groups. Its mf C₅H₆O₄, mw 130.099, and it exists as a white crystal or powder at room temperature. Itaconic acid exhibits highly reactive chemical properties, capable of undergoing various addition reactions, esterification reactions, and polymerization reactions. It finds extensive applications in polymers, water treatment, biomedicine, and other fields.

Itaconic acid is used in the polymer industry for synthetic fiber modification, synthetic resins and plastics, ion exchange resins, and S.B.R. latex preparation. It also serves as a carpet backing agent and paper coating agent.
Itaconic acid serves as a highly effective descaling agent, scale inhibitor, dispersant, and chelating agent in water treatment applications.
Used in preparing biodegradable polymer scaffolds, drug-release carriers, and other biomedical materials. Also employed in disease treatment research for anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and immunomodulatory effects.
As a natural acidulant, it partially replaces citric acid, serving as a pH adjuster and flavor enhancer.
It also functions as a deodorant raw material, synthetic cosmetic additive, surfactant, lubricant additive, adhesive, and herbicide.
