L Methionine (also known as L-methylthio-methionine) is a sulfur-containing essential amino acid. Its chemical name is (2S)-2-amino-4 -methylthiobutanoic acid, with the molecular formula C5H11NO2S and a molecular weight of 149.21. It appears as white, flaky crystals or a crystalline powder, has a distinctive odor, and tastes slightly sweet. As the only sulfur-containing essential amino acid in the human body, it cannot be synthesized endogenously. It serves as the initiator amino acid for protein synthesis and is a primary source of methyl and sulfur groups in the body. It is widely used in the pharmaceutical, feed, food, cosmetics, and chemical industries.
