Lead monoxide (MF: PbO MW: 223.1994), commonly known in industry as ‘litharge’ or ‘lead white’, is one of the principal oxides of lead. It exists as a stable solid at ambient temperatures, appearing as a yellow or red powder depending on the preparation process. Lead monoxide serves as a versatile chemical raw material, finding extensive application in industries such as glass, ceramics, and batteries. Due to its lead content, lead monoxide is toxic and must be handled and stored in strict compliance with safety protocols.

As a fluxing agent, it lowers the melting temperature of glass, used in the production of speciality glass such as optical glass, cathode-ray tube glass, and heat-resistant glass.
As a fluxing agent and colouring agent, it reduces the melting temperature of ceramic glazes, commonly employed in tableware ceramics and industrial enamelled components.
