Methylparaben (MF: C₈H₈O₃, MW: 152.15) is the most commonly used and classic preservative among the p-hydroxybenzoate esters, and is classified as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent. It exhibits excellent inhibitory effects against moulds, yeasts and bacteria; its antimicrobial efficacy is minimally affected by pH and it offers high stability, making it a classic preservative widely used in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors.

Cosmetics and personal care: Methylparaben is used as a preservative in products such as face creams, lotions, shampoos, shower gels and facial cleansers to extend shelf life.
Food Industry: Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is used in beverages, jams, soy sauce, sauces, pastries, etc., to inhibit the growth of mould and microorganisms.
Pharmaceutical Sector: Used as an antibacterial preservative in pharmaceutical formulations (oral solutions, topical preparations) and also as a pharmaceutical excipient.
