Tetradecanol (1-Tetradecanol) is a straight-chain saturated fatty alcohol. At room temperature, it is a white, waxy solid with the molecular formula C₁₄H₃₀O and a molecular weight of 214.39. Its molecular structure consists of a straight chain of 14 carbon atoms and a terminal hydroxyl group. It has a waxy odor and is hydrophobic. It is slightly soluble in water but readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and diethyl ether. It is produced by the methylation and hydrogenation of coconut oil or via the Ziegler method of ethylene oligomerization. It is widely used in the personal care, pharmaceutical, textile, and plastics industries, offering multiple functions including emulsification, thickening, skin conditioning, and antimicrobial properties.
