Chemical Properties Of Oxalic acid

Oxalic acid (MF: C₂H₂O₄ MW: 90.03), also known as ethane-1,2-dioic acid/HOOCCOOH, is the simplest dicarboxylic acid. It exists as a white powder at room temperature. As the strongest acid among dicarboxylic acids, it possesses not only typical carboxylic acid properties but also reducing properties. It can quantitatively reduce heptavalent manganese to divalent manganese. and chelating properties (capable of binding metal ions such as Ca²⁺ and Fe³⁺). Its dihydrate forms colorless, transparent monoclinic crystals that readily deliquesce in air.

  1.  Chemical and Materials Industry:
    – Oxalic acid is used as a rust remover and cleaning agent in machinery manufacturing and hardware processing;
    – Serves as a chelating agent and separator for rare earth metal separation and precious metal refining;
    – Used in synthesizing oxalates, oxalic anhydride, etc., for pharmaceuticals, dyes, coatings, and related industries;
    – Employed as a bleaching agent in textiles and papermaking, partially replacing chlorine-based bleaches;
  2.  Pharmaceutical and Food Industry:
    – Serves as a pharmaceutical intermediate for synthesizing antibiotics, vitamin C, anti-tuberculosis drugs, etc.;
    – HOOCCOOH permitted as a chelating agent and acidity regulator;
    – Used in chemical analysis for titrating metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, and iron.
  3.  Agriculture and Environmental Protection:
    – Low-concentration oxalic acid for weed control;
    – Used in industrial wastewater treatment, simultaneously reducing oxidizing pollutants in water.
  4.  Other Applications:
    – Ethanedioic acid is used for polishing stone and metals (e.g., stainless steel products) to enhance surface finish.
    – Serves as an additive in lithium-ion battery electrolytes to improve cycle performance.
