Chemical Properties Of Phthalic anhydride CAS 85-44-9

  1. Phthalic anhydride (MF:C8H4O3, MW:148.12, EINECS:201-607-5), a white needle-like crystal with a slight odor, is an important organic chemical raw material. It is a universal anti-scorching agent for natural rubber, isoprene rubber, butadiene rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber and nitrile rubber, which can prevent scorching and improve operational safety.
  2. Phthalic anhydride is also a widely used anhydride type epoxy resin curing agent. It is low in price and generates little heat during curing, making it particularly suitable for large castings and laminated products. The cured product has excellent electrical properties and mechanical strength, and also has good chemical resistance (but poor alkali resistance), with a heat deflection temperature of 110 to 147℃.

  1. Phthalic acid anhydride is a key raw material for the production of alkyd resins. For instance, alkyd resins are widely used in the coating industry and can be used to manufacture various types of civil and industrial paints, such as furniture paint and automotive paint, which can endow the paint film with excellent decorative and protective properties.
  2. Phthalic anhydride is indispensable in the synthesis of unsaturated polyester resin. It is often used to manufacture fiberglass reinforced plastic products, such as fiberglass reinforced plastic pipes, plates, automotive parts, ship hulls, etc. Due to its advantages of high strength, light weight and corrosion resistance, it is widely applied in construction, transportation, aerospace and other fields.
  3. Phthalic anhydride is the main raw material for the production of phthalate plasticizers. Phthalate plasticizers are the most commonly used plasticizers in plastic processing, such as DOP, DBP, etc. It is widely used in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic products, such as plastic films, artificial leather, wire and cable sheaths, plastic pipes, etc.
