
Poly allylamine hydrochloride is a cationic polymer formed by the free-radical polymerisation of allylamine hydrochloride (monomer). Its defining characteristic is the presence of numerous protonated amino groups (-CH₂CH(CH₂NH₃⁺Cl⁻)-) within the molecular chain. The amino group (-NH₃⁺) reacts with carboxylic acids, acyl chlorides, epoxy groups, etc., enabling functionalisation modifications that combine water solubility, cationic adsorption properties, and biocompatibility. The methylene groups (-CH₂) in the molecular chain undergo cross-linking under high temperatures or ultraviolet light, forming insoluble gels. This makes polyallylamine hydrochloride a commonly used functional polymer material in industrial and pharmaceutical applications.
