Chemical Properties Of Polyethyleneimine CAS 9002-98-6

  • Polyethyleneimine (MF: C₂H₅N, MW: 43.07) is a water-soluble polymer formed by ring-opening polymerisation of ethyleneimine monomers. Depending on the polymerisation method, it can be classified into linear PEI (Linear PEI) and branched PEI (Branched PEI).
  • Polyethyleneimine possesses strong cationic properties, high reactivity, and excellent water solubility due to the presence of numerous amino groups (primary amines, secondary amines, tertiary amines) in its molecular structure.

Product Application Of Polyethyleneimine CAS 9002-98-6

  1. Polyethyleneimine can act as a flocculant to adsorb negatively charged colloidal particles in water (such as silt, organic matter, and heavy metal ions), promoting their settling. It is used for the purification of industrial wastewater, municipal sewage, and the treatment of wastewater containing heavy metals.
  2. PEI can react with functional groups on the surfaces of materials such as metals, plastics, and fibres to introduce amino groups, thereby enhancing the adhesion of coatings and adhesives. It is applied in printed circuit boards and automotive coatings.
  3. Grafting PEI onto the surfaces of medical devices can improve their hydrophilicity or impart antimicrobial properties, and it can also be used for surface modification of cell culture carriers.
  4. Branched PEI, due to its cationic nature, can form complexes (polyplexes) with negatively charged DNA/RNA and enter cells via endocytosis, making it a commonly used non-viral gene transfection reagent in laboratory research.
  5. As a wet strength agent, PEI can enhance the wet strength of paper or improve its water resistance when used as a sizing agent.
  6. Polyethyleneimine can react with fibre surfaces to enhance fabric wrinkle resistance, dye fastness, or impart antimicrobial properties.
  7. PEI is used to prepare high-performance adhesives, particularly suitable for bonding polar materials.
