It is a derivative of potassium sulfate (K₂SO₄) where one oxygen atom is replaced by a sulfur atom. It exhibits strong reducing properties, reacting with oxidizing agents such as chlorine and iodine, and forming stable complexes with metal ions like silver and copper. It is stable in dry air but readily caking when exposed to moisture; it decomposes upon heating to approximately 100°C.
