Chemical Properties Of Shellac

Shellac is a natural, renewable animal-derived resin. It is refined from the resinous substance secreted by lac insects and represents one of the earliest natural polymeric materials utilized by humans. The chemical properties of shellac are determined by the functional groups of its core component, lac resin acid. It combines the stability of polymeric compounds with the reactive activity of functional groups, exhibiting excellent film-forming properties, adhesive strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility.

Product Application Of Shellac

  1.  As a food-grade coating agent, Shellac Flake is used for surface coating of fruits (apples, citrus, pears), candy, chocolate, and tablet coating, as well as a binder and stabilizer in chewing gum and baked goods.
  2.  As a pharmaceutical coating material, Shellac Flake is used for film coating tablets and pills, as a plasticizer and stabilizer for capsule shells, and as a matrix component in excipient formulations for topical preparations.
  3.  As a film-forming agent and binder, Shellac Flake is used in products like nail polish, mascara, and eyebrow pencils. It also serves as an emulsion stabilizer and thickener in creams, lotions, and lipsticks.
  4.  Industrial Applications:
    – Used to prepare natural resin coatings (e.g., shellac varnish);
    – As a film-forming agent and binder in printing inks (e.g., gravure inks, flexographic inks).
    – Used in preparing natural polymer adhesives; also serves as encapsulation material for electronic components, offering excellent insulation and moisture resistance.
    – Employed in metal surface treatment (e.g., rust-proof coatings), leather tanning, and mold release agents.
  5.  Used as adhesives and coating agents in the restoration and preservation of ancient architecture, calligraphy, paintings, and cultural relics.
