Sodium metabisulfite, also known as sodium pyrosulfite, is an inorganic metabisulfite with the molecular formula Na₂S₂O₅ and a molecular weight of 190.11. It is a white crystalline powder with a sulfur dioxide odor. It is highly soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is acidic. It possesses strong reducing, bleaching, preservative, and antioxidant properties, and is widely used in the food industry, industrial bleaching, water treatment, and pharmaceutical and personal care sectors.
