Sodium pyrithione with the molecular formula C5H4NNaOS, is a white to off-white crystalline powder; the industrial grade product has a slight yellowish tint. It is stable at room temperature, readily soluble in water and ethanol, and possesses excellent broad-spectrum antibacterial, antifungal, and preservative properties. It is primarily used as a preservative in personal care and cosmetic products, a mold inhibitor in coatings and emulsion paints, a biocide in industrial recirculating water systems, an antimicrobial additive in textiles and leather, and a preservative ingredient in personal care and laundry products.
