Sodium rhodizonate (molecular formula C₆Na₂O₆, molecular weight 214.04) is an organic sodium salt used as a sensitive analytical reagent and biological stain. It appears as a purple / dark brown crystals or dark green powder. It dissolves in water to form an orange-yellow solution, is slightly soluble in sodium bicarbonate solution, and is insoluble in alcohol. Its solution is unstable and must be freshly prepared. It possesses strong metal ion complexing ability and serves as a highly effective indicator in chemical analysis, widely used for the detection of heavy metal ions and sulfates. It is also used in biological staining and the preparation of photosensitive materials.
