Sodium thioacetate, also known as sodium thioethanoate, is the sodium salt of thioacetic acid (HSCH₂COONa). It is a white crystalline powder that is hygroscopic and has a faint, distinctive odor. Its molecular formula is C₂H₃NaO₂S, and its molecular weight is 114.09. It is chemically reactive, exhibiting both strong reducing properties and metal chelating ability. It is widely used in mineral processing, daily chemicals, electroplating, and analytical chemistry, and can replace highly toxic sodium cyanide, making it an important environmentally friendly organic sulfur compound.
