It belongs to the class of aromatic-alicyclic bicyclic hydrocarbons, and its molecular structure is derived from the hydrogenation of naphthalene at positions 1, 2, 3, and 4. It is insoluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents. It serves as an important solvent, intermediate, and functional additive in organic synthesis, the coatings industry, and the pharmaceutical and pesticide sectors. Organic Synthesis: Tetralin is used to produce key intermediates such as methanaphthol and methanaphthamine, which are employed in the production of fine chemicals including pesticides, dyes, and fragrances.
Industrial Solvent: Dissolves resins, oils, paints, and waxes; used as a metal degreasing agent; can also replace turpentine in product finishing.
Material Additive: Improves processing properties of rubber and plastics, accelerates drying of oil-based paint films, and can be used to formulate specialty lubricants.
Other Applications: Tetralin is used as a chromatographic reagent and an absorbent for industrial organic exhaust gases; also used in fuel blending and the manufacture of insect repellents.
