Chemical Properties Of Triclosan

Triclosan, chemically known as 2,4,4′-Trichloro-2′-hydroxybenzene ether, has the MF: C₁₂H₇Cl₃O₂ and  MW: 289.54. It is a synthetic broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent. At room temperature, it appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder with no noticeable odor. Its molecule contains a phenolic hydroxyl group (-OH), exhibiting weak acidity with a pKa of approximately 7.9. It can undergo neutralization reactions with strong bases to form phenolate salts. The phenolic hydroxyl group readily undergoes oxidation reactions, forming quinone derivatives under the action of strong oxidizing agents. The chlorine atoms on the benzene ring can undergo substitution reactions under high temperatures or in the presence of strong nucleophilic reagents.

Product Application Of Triclosan

  1.  Medical and Healthcare Applications:
    – Triclosan is used in medical antimicrobial ointments, wound disinfectant sprays, and povidone-iodine compound disinfectants for antibacterial protection of superficial skin wounds and mucous membranes, reducing postoperative infection risks.
    – Triclosan serves as an antimicrobial additive in dental filling materials and denture cleaners to inhibit colonization of oral pathogens.

  2. Triclosan can be incorporated into plastics (e.g., food-contact containers, children’s toys), textiles (e.g., medical protective clothing, antimicrobial home textiles), and coatings (e.g., antimicrobial wall paints) to impart long-lasting antimicrobial properties. Typical addition levels range from 0.2% to 1.0%.

  3.  Agricultural Applications:
    Triclosan can serve as an auxiliary component in fruit and vegetable preservatives to inhibit the proliferation of saprophytic bacteria on surfaces, extending shelf life. Residue levels must be strictly controlled.
