  1. Triethyl citrate is an ester compound produced by the esterification reaction of citric acid and ethanol, with the chemical formula C₁₂H₂₀O₇ and a molecular weight of 276.28. At standard temperature and pressure, it is an oily, colourless liquid with a sweet and pleasant aroma reminiscent of fruit wine and plums.

  2. Triethyl citrate (TEC) is a non-phthalate environmentally friendly ester that is soluble in most organic solvents. It slowly hydrolyses into citric acid and ethanol when exposed to strong acids or bases. It has good thermal stability but is poorly soluble in oils. TEC has good compatibility with most cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate resins, and chlorinated rubber.

Product Application Of Triethyl Citrate CAS 77-93-0

Triethyl citrate, with its low toxicity, good compatibility, and combined plasticising and solvent properties, has the following applications:

  1. As an environmentally friendly plasticiser, Triethyl citrate can be used in PVC films for food packaging, medical PVC products (such as IV tubes and blood bags), children’s toys, and cosmetic packaging—areas with high safety requirements.
  2. In water-based coatings and latex coatings, Triethyl citrate acts as a film-forming aid to regulate the flexibility and adhesion of the coating film, reducing cracking.
  3. As a pharmaceutical excipient, TEC is used as a plasticiser in tablets and capsules (such as enteric coating materials) and can also serve as a solvent or co-solvent in injections to enhance drug solubility.
  4. In products such as nail polish, hair spray, and skincare lotions, TEC is used as a plasticiser, solvent, or viscosity regulator to improve product texture.
  5. Within standard limits, Triethyl citrate can be used as a plasticiser for food packaging materials or as a flavour solvent and emulsifier in beverages, candies, and other flavour formulations.
  6. As a carrier or stabiliser, TEC is used in the processing of feed additives.
  7. As a solvent or plasticiser for tobacco flavourings, it improves the taste and burning performance of cigarettes.
  8. TEC can also be used as an antioxidant to stabilise soybean oil, salad oil, margarine, shortening, and other edible oils.
