Zinc pyrithione is a zinc salt of bis(2-thio-1-oxopyridine), also known as pyrithione zinc or ometine zinc. Its molecular formula is C₁₀H₈N₂O₂S₂Zn, and its molecular weight is 317.72. At room temperature, it is a white to pale yellow crystalline powder with a slight characteristic odor. It is slightly soluble in water and chemically stable (stable within a pH range of 4.5–9.5). It is a highly effective broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal agent whose core mechanism of action involves disrupting microbial cell membranes, inhibiting proton pumps, and disrupting membrane transport. It is widely used in the fields of personal care, pharmaceuticals, industrial preservation, and marine antifouling.
