Phenanthrene with the molecular formula C₁₄H₁₀, is a white, lustrous, flaky crystal that exhibits blue fluorescence in solution; It is stable at room temperature, readily sublimates, is insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, and readily soluble in organic solvents such as diethyl ether, benzene, and toluene. Its chemical reactivity is concentrated at the 9- and 10-positions, and it readily undergoes oxidation, addition, and substitution reactions.
