Menthol (MF: C₁₀H₂₀O, MW: 156.27) is a cyclic monoterpenol compound; its chemical name is 1-methyl-4 -isopropylcyclohexanol. It appears as colorless needle-like or prismatic crystals or a white crystalline powder, possesses a strong, refreshing minty aroma, has a taste that is initially pungent followed by a cooling sensation, and is sublimable. Its ethanol solution is neutral. It is widely used in the pharmaceutical, personal care, and food industries.

Medical Applications: Menthol is used in the production of mentholated oil, anti-itch ointments, throat lozenges, and nasal decongestants to provide a cooling, itch-relieving effect, relieve nasal congestion, and alleviate swelling and pain.
Food Industry: L-Menthol is used to formulate mint-flavored food flavorings for chewing gum, frozen desserts, candies, and beverages to enhance flavor and provide a cooling sensation.
Personal Care Products: Added to toothpaste, mouthwash, hair and skin care products, and fragrances to provide a refreshing scent, invigorate the senses, and soothe the skin.
Other Uses: Levomenthol is used in tobacco flavoring; also serves as a raw material for fine personal care fragrances and as an antimicrobial adjuvant.
