Solvent Selection: High-purity food-grade or industrial-grade ethanol (alcohol) is the optimal choice, typically around 95% concentration. Never use methanol (toxic) or inferior alcohol containing impurities.

Dissolution Ratio: The common preparation ratio is “pound cut,” meaning 1 pound of shellac dissolved in 1 gallon of alcohol, approximately a 1:5 weight ratio (e.g., 100 grams of shellac with 500 milliliters of alcohol). Concentration can be adjusted as needed.

Procedure:

  • First, pour the calculated amount of alcohol into a container.
  • Slowly sprinkle the shellac fragments into the alcohol while gently stirring (avoid dumping all at once to prevent clumping).
  • Seal the container tightly and place it in a cool, well-ventilated area. Stir every 15–30 minutes to aid dissolution.
  • At room temperature, the mixture will largely dissolve within 1–2 hours. If minor undissolved particles remain, allow it to sit overnight (no heating required; high temperatures accelerate alcohol evaporation and shellac has poor heat resistance).

VI. Side Effects and Limitations

Physical Properties: Not resistant to high temperatures (>65°C causes softening) or strong alkaline cleaners. The cured film can still be dissolved by alcohol.

Weather Resistance: Prolonged exposure to outdoor UV radiation and moisture will cause gradual degradation; not suitable for outdoor coatings.
