Chemical Properties Of Isopropanol

Isopropanol also called Isopropyl alcohol (MF: C₃H₈O, MW: 60.1) is a colorless, transparent, volatile polar organic solvent with an odor resembling a mixture of ethanol and acetone. It exhibits the chemical properties of alcohols, reacting with acids in esterification reactions and being oxidized to acetone. Dehydration produces propylene. It is non-corrosive to metals (except aluminum, which may react at elevated temperatures). Isopropanol can substitute ethanol as a solvent in many applications, serving as an excellent solvent and chemical feedstock.

Product Application Of Isopropanol

  1.  Solvent Applications:
    – Industrial solvent for coatings, inks, adhesives, cleaning agents, etc.;
    – Diluting agent, extractant in pharmaceutical formulations, and solvent for topical preparations;
    – Solvent for perfumes, cosmetics, hair dyes to dissolve fragrances, pigments, and oil components.

  2.  As a chemical intermediate Isopropanol for synthesizing acetone, isopropyl ester, isopropylamine, polyether polyols, etc.

  3.  70%-75% concentration isopropyl alcohol serves as a highly effective disinfectant with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity, suitable for skin disinfection, medical device sterilization, and surface disinfection;

  4. Isopropyl alcohol is used for cleaning electronic components (e.g., semiconductors, circuit boards).

  5.  Isopropyl alcohol is also employed as a fuel additive, mobile phase in laboratory chromatography, and sample diluent.
