I. What Is Epoxidized Soybean Oil?

Epoxidized soybean oil, also known as ESO/ESBO, is a pale yellow, viscous liquid with a slight oily odor. It is produced from ordinary soybean oil; under the action of a catalyst, hydrogen peroxide or peracetic acid is used to convert the unsaturated double bonds in the soybean oil molecules into highly reactive epoxy groups.

This process transforms ordinary soybean oil into a fine chemical with an epoxy value of 6.0% or higher, an acid value of less than 0.5 mg KOH/g, and an iodine value of 6 or lower. This means that ESO retains the renewable characteristics of soybean oil as a bio-based material (biocarbon content >95%) while also achieving excellent chemical reactivity and stability.

II. Uses of Epoxidized Soybean Oil

Epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) finds its most significant application in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products. Pure PVC is hard and brittle; plasticizers must be added to make it flexible and pliable, and epoxidized soybean oil excels in this role.

1. Food and Pharmaceutical Safety Sector

In fields with extremely stringent safety requirements—such as food-grade plastic wrap, beverage bottle cap gaskets, medical blood transfusion bags, and IV tubing—epoxy soybean oil serves a dual role as both a co-plasticizer and a heat stabilizer. It absorbs hydrogen chloride released during PVC processing due to thermal decomposition, preventing further degradation of the material and effectively extending the product’s lifespan. It is typically used in combination with environmentally friendly primary plasticizers, with an addition rate ranging from 5 to 30 parts. Taking medical-grade PVC products as an example, the addition of epoxidized soybean oil can sometimes account for 30% to 40% of the total plasticizers, ensuring flexibility while eliminating the risk of phthalate migration.

2. Children’s toys and other daily consumer goods

Children’s play mats, synthetic leather sofas, automotive interior components, wire and cable sheaths… Epoxidized soybean oil is commonly found in these soft PVC products that are all around us in daily life. It gives the materials a comfortable, elastic texture, and—thanks to its low volatility and good water and weather resistance—makes the products less odorous and drier to the touch. Furthermore, epoxidized soybean oil is expanding its reach into the fields of coatings, adhesives, inks, and even bio-based lubricants—polyols for rigid polyurethane foam prepared from it can further increase the bio-carbon content of the final products.

It is estimated that replacing 1 metric ton of petroleum-based di-n-octyl phthalate(DOP) with epoxidized soybean oil can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2 to 3 metric tons, adding a tangible “green seal” to carbon reduction commitments.

III. How Safe Is Epoxidized Soybean Oil?

Epoxidized soybean oil is approved for use in the food and medical fields based on a series of rigorous toxicological “tests.” Its acute oral toxicity LD₅₀ is greater than 5,000 milligrams per kilogram, classifying it as virtually non-toxic. It has tested negative in the Ames test, chromosome aberration test, and other assays, indicating that it is neither genotoxic nor carcinogenic. The U.S. FDA has long included it on the list of additives permitted for direct food contact, and the EU Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 on plastic food contact materials explicitly permits its use, setting a strict limit on total migration of no more than 10 milligrams per square decimeter. China’s GB 9685-2016 similarly permits the use of epoxidized soybean oil in various materials, including food-contact plastics, coatings, and adhesives. All of this sufficiently demonstrates that, when added in compliance with regulations, it is quite safe.

However, this “safety guardian” derived from natural materials is by no means flawless. Its advantages and disadvantages are equally distinct:

Advantages:

  • Renewable and eco-friendly: Soybeans, the raw material, can be cultivated year after year; they are highly biodegradable and do not accumulate in the environment over time.
  • Low toxicity and low migration: Extremely low oral and inhalation toxicity; migration into food is far below safety thresholds, eliminating “phthalate fears.”
  • All-in-one functionality: It serves both as a plasticizing aid and a thermal stabilizer, absorbing the HCl released during PVC degradation and producing a synergistic effect with calcium-zinc stabilizers.
  • Excellent product feel: It imparts a dry, low-odor surface to plastics, making it suitable for manufacturing skin-friendly products.

Disadvantages:

  • Low Compatibility Limit: It has limited compatibility with PVC resin; when used alone in large quantities, “precipitation” or even “sweating” may occur, leaving the surface of the finished product greasy and sticky. Therefore, it is essentially limited to a “supporting role,” with its total usage generally not exceeding 30% to 40% of the total plasticizer content.
  • Sensitive to Light and Heat, Prone to Yellowing: Residual unsaturated bonds in the molecule and the inherent oxidative tendency of the epoxy groups cause products to yellow easily when exposed to prolonged sunlight or high-temperature baking, limiting its performance in outdoor profiles or light-colored products.
  • Mediocre Resistance to Extraction: When exposed to fats, oils, or organic solvents, epoxidized soybean oil is easily “extracted” from the material. Therefore, careful evaluation is required when using it in materials intended for long-term contact with high-fat foods.
  • Odor and processing limitations: Although its odor is milder than that of other vegetable oil-based plasticizers, a faint bean-like odor can still be detected in some enclosed spaces; additionally, its lubricity may affect melt flow during high-speed extrusion processing.
  • According to publicly available industry data, the global market size for epoxidized soybean oil exceeded $600 million in 2023, with annual production surpassing 600,000 metric tons.
